April 23rd

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As you are aware we had some Covid cases in the school during this week.  All cases and there are less than 10 notified to date are confined to the sixth year Leaving Certificate group.   As a result, on the advice of the HSE sixth year Leaving Certificate students will be out of school for next week.

Leaving Certificate Applied sixth year students can attend school as normal.

Please find letter from the HSE received this evening – Click Here.

Classes will run as normal in school for all year groups 1st, 2nd, 3rd Transition Year, 5th year and LCA 5th and 6th year from Monday next April 26th.

Sixth year classes will be online next week.

I would like to thank parents for your support this week and not allowing your children to attend school if they had any form of illness.  Please continue to monitor your children carefully and if they have any symptoms even minor do not send them to school until you have checked the situation with your GP.

We are implementing all safety procedures in the school to help control the spread of Covid 19.  The events of the past week show us very clearly how easy it is for Covid 19 to cause worry to our school community.

Wishing you well and keep safe.

Regards,

Matthew Carr.

Dear Parents.

Over the past week our school community has faced deep sadness at the loss of Oisín Williams (RIP), who was a hugely popular and valued pupil. We have continued with lessons, as we know that students benefit from the sense of purpose, routine and support this provides.

As the Easter break approaches, I am mindful that some students may struggle without the structure of school and lessons, and may need even more support from you. It can be difficult to know how to provide this and so a summary of some key points from the many sources of advice available are available – Click Here.

If you have questions or concerns which this document does not address, and which you would like to share with school staff, please email me – matthew.carr@borrisokanecc.ie, and we at Borrisokane Community College will do what we can to be of assistance and support in the coming days and when we return to school.

Please remember that if you have urgent concerns for your child, you should contact your GP or the local out of hours GP service.

Yours sincerely,

Matthew Carr (Principal, Borrisokane Community College)

March 17th

It is with deep sadness that we heard of the death of our 5th year student Oisin Williams this morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Oisin’s family at this very difficult time.  Oisin was a 5th year student in 5A class and Oisin’s brother is sixth year student Paudi Williams.

Supports will be available for students during the coming days and tomorrow morning during first class teachers will connect with all our students,

Transition Year Students,

If you are interested in sport, or coaching, or refereeing or simply want to add to your CV the following is perfect for you.

I have been offered these 2 short online courses for TY students.

  1. Grab Your Whistle Go Games Referee Course
    1. This is a basic referee course to upskill your students to be able to officiate at non-competitive Go Games blitzes and games in their county
    2. We will ensure their county is aware that students in the school have completed the module as there may be an opportunity for them to earn some money while officiating when games recommence also

2.Ready Steady Coach

    1. This is a basic coaching module to introduce students to fundamental coaching skills and increase their knowledge on the skills of gaelic football
    2. Students may then go on to complete the Introduction to Coaching Gaelic Games as the next level to this module within their club or county

There is a limit of 20 students for the live online course ran by LGFA.

The first 20 students back to Ms Cunningham with their names and which course they would prefer to do will get a place on the course.

Minister for Education and Skills announces postponement of 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations – Click Here for Statement.

The following is a breakdown of the process to be applied for students to be given the option of Calculated Grades or to sit the examinations.

  1. The 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations, previously scheduled to take place in late July and August, have been postponed.
  2. There will be no Leaving Certificate fee this year. All exam fees which have been paid will be refunded.
  3. Teachers will be asked to provide a professional judgment of each student’s attainment which will be subjected to a rigorous in-school alignment process to ensure fairness.
  4. The school principal will approve the estimated scores being provided and the rankings of each student in each subject in the school.
  5. A special unit is being established within the Department of Education and Skills to process the data provided by each school and operate national standardisation, again to ensure fairness amongst all students.
  6. The Department will finalise the grades for each student which will be issued to each student as close as possible to the traditional date. Formal State certification will also be provided.
  7. Students will retain the right to appeal. This will involve checks on school-entered data; correct transfer of that data to the Department; a review that it was correctly received and processed by the Department; and a verification of the Department’s processes by independent appeal scrutineers.
  8. Students will also retain the right to the sit the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations at a date in the future when it is deemed safe for state examinations to be held.
