Erasmus + Partners Erasmus+ Teacher Visit to Borrisokane Community College

This week Borrisokane Community College were delighted to host Erasmus+ colleagues from partner schools in Germany, Spain and Austria as part of a job shadowing experience focusing on Inclusion for our new Erasmus+ Project Include Me. This project examines social inclusion in schools and promoting common values through storytelling. Two teachers from Georg-Büchner-Schule, Germany, Two teachers from Vedruga Belauer School, Spain and one teacher representing Mittelschule Haiming and Allgemeine Sonderschule Haiming, Austria, met with Mr Carr Principal and Ms Molloy Deputy Principal to discuss the Irish school system and the programs offered at Borrisokane Community College. The group visited and observed lessons in the ASD centre, cooked with first years, spoke with a second year German class, and watched our TY’s practice their drama. They also got the opportunity to see how Bodhrán’s are made, listen to a performance from our Trad band and even got to learn some hurling skills. A meeting also took place to plan for their return visit with their students in May and the trip finished with an online webinar so the teachers could check in with their students at home. Thanks to Ms Heavey, Ms Morgan, the Erasmus teacher Committee and our Transition Year Erasmus + Class for organising this event. This project is funded by Erasmus+ and the European Union.

1st Year Boys Soccer

Our 1st year boys played their third game in quick succession on Tuesday last. The venue was Newport Town FC and the conditions were difficult, however this did not take from the occasion. A place in the next round of the FAI schools Munster Championship was the reward for the victorious team and this provided an added incentive for both teams.

As has been the case for most games this season, Borrisokane started the game at a blistering pace with Ryan Donnelly looking menacing down the left wing. Jack Slevin also looked up for the challenge, putting himself about down the right hand side. A well placed through ball on 10 minutes, set Jack free one on one with the Newport keeper. Jack was fouled in the box by the last Newport defender as he scrambled back to try preventing a certain goal. The referee pointed to the spot and reached for a yellow card. Newport were relieved that the colour was not red. Up stepped Ryan Donnelly, only for the Newport Keeper to save the penalty with his right hand. However, he spilled the shot and as Ryan attempted to score the rebound, he was fouled in the process. The referee again pointed to the spot and Ryan made no mistake on the second time of asking, striking the ball well and high to the right of the keeper.

This awoke Newport and they began to look more threatening in the game. Some carless defending on 20 minutes allowed Newport to level the game. They built on the momentum and quickly followed up with a second on 22 minutes. The first half ended at 2-1 with both teams well in the game.

Newport had a couple of chances from distance and keeper David Quinlisk looked confident in goal for the most part. The next goal would be decisive and as Borrisokane chased that all-important equaliser to level the game, they allowed Newport to capitalise and score their third of the day.

Newport saw out a late rally from Borrisokane, however they held their nerve to end the game as worthy winners and book their place in the next round. A game played in great spirits saw both teams exchange well wishes at the final whistle.

Our focus now turns to the North Munster Cup after mid-term.

1st & 2nd Year Girls Basketball

There were mixed fortunes in the midlands League this week.  1st years responded to last weeks narrow defeat with an impressive 31-9 victory. Our 2nd years unfortunately had a narrow 18-12 defeat despite growing into the game.  Thank you to Kilbeggan for two great games and great sportsmanship throughout.
