Borrisokane Community College School Notes

1st Year Camogie Blitz

Twenty Eight 1st year students travelled to Dr. Morris Park, Thurles 1st February to participate in a blitz. Borrisokane CC were grouped together with Ursuline, Cashel, St. Marys Nenagh and Presentation Thurles. Our first team played Ursuline at 11am and this match ended with no score. Our second team played Cashel and we won this game 1 goal to 1 point. The girls then prepared to play Presentation where they worked hard and won this game well. Following on from this match, we prepared to play Presentation’s second team and also came out on top. The final two games were against St Marys who also had two teams. Well done to St Marys who managed to get over the line, however the Borrisokane team gave a mighty performance for their final game scoring 3 goals and came out on top. The girls worked really hard and gave a fantastic performance. Well done to everyone involved. It was a fantastic success, and everyone really enjoyed the day.

Girls Basketball

We commenced our Midlands girl basketball competition this week.  1st years lost narrowly in a back and forth contest that was tied midway through the final quarter.

2nd years were also defeated but grew in confidence as the game progressed.  Great effort by the girls involved and much optimism can be taken going forward in the competition.

Boys Basketball

Hard luck to the second year boys who put up a good fight against a strong Killina team. The BCC boys scored an impressive 8 three pointers but it wasn’t enough to take victory. Onwards and upwards for our game next week.  A great win for our 1st year boys basketball team against Killina. It was a fantastic game, with some super scores on a score line of 24-16.

1st Year Boys Soccer

Our 1st year boys played their final North Munster Cup group game on Wednesday the 2nd of February. Our opponents, Hazelwood College of Dromcollogher in Limerick had a similar run of form in the group to date. With very little between any of the teams points wise this was a crucial game.

It was Borrisokane who started the brighter, dominating possession and looking menacing in the early minutes. A well worked set piece on 2 minutes from a Ryan Donnelly corner called the Hazelwood keeper into action early. Both schools went close on several occasions and Hazelwood applied pressure to the Borrisokane defence. MOTM Darragh O Brien was excellent at right back and prevented wave after wave of attack. Hazelwood took the lead before half time when a through ball was kept in play by a defensive error, allowing Hazelwood to capitalise.

The second half started with the same frantic pace as the first. Borrisokane applied a lot of pressure to the Hazelwood defence, and it materialised on 34 minutes when Ryan Donnelly finished well from the left, curling an unstoppable shot home. However, Borrisokane’s joy was short-lived, when some lax marking in midfield allowed Hazelwood to take the lead once again.

Borrisokane levelled the contest on 40 minutes when Jack Slevin finished off a pacy run with a lovely finish, poking the ball through the oncoming Hazelwood keeper’s legs. Credit to Hazelwood who never dipped in confidence. Both teams knew the next goal would be crucial in this contest and it was Hazelwood who were rewarded for their efforts on 50 minutes when they took the lead for the third time. The game ended 5-2 to Hazelwood, however it was a much closer contest than the score line reflects. We qualify for the knock out stages and await to hear who our opponents will be. Thank you to Hazelwood, their players, coaches and teachers for a wonderful contest. Our next game is on Tuesday February 8th against St. Marys Newport in the FAI Schools Munster Championship.
