Borrisokane Community College School Notes 19th March 2018

 CSPE Trip to Dublin

On the 8th of March classes 2A and 2C went to the GPO for their CSPE action project. The chosen topic was Democracy. The students decided to do this since it is the 100th year anniversary of Countess Markievicz being elected to the Parliament. Countess Markievicz played a large role in the 1916 rising/rebellion. On the day students listened to a talk on the rising and were shown exhibitions on the uniforms they wore and the Irish flag. The tricolour was explained to them: green for Catholics, white for unity and peace and orange represents protestants: put simply, peace between Catholics and Protestants. They watched a documentary showing what life was like inside the GPO during those six days of the Easter Rising. They learned about the leaders of the rising (Padraig Pearse, Éamonn Ceannt, Joseph Plunkett, Sean Mac Diarmada and Thomas Mac Donagh and James Connolly)and the women involved. They were fascinated by stories of Winnie Kearney, founder member of Cumann na mBan and secretary to James Connolly. The proclamation was shown to them which showed a vision of Ireland where all men and women were equal citizens of society. Students found the tour guide very informative and were given time to ask questions at the end. They were very impressed by the art piece in front of the building, a tribute to the 40 children that lost their lives during the rising. Students really enjoyed the trip to the GPO in Dublin.

Borrisokane Community College Schools go Orange

On Friday 9th March Active Schools week ended with an extremely enjoyable and colourful “Schools go Orange Day” in aid of the Cycle Against Suicide.  It was a fun packed day full of activities.  2nd and 5th years began the day with an energetic exercise Zumba class with Alexandra.  Students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate a range of dance moves to traditional Brazilian music.  Transition year students prepared delicious and healthy orange smoothies, fruit and treats to enjoy as they listened to a talk on “Food and Mood”. 1st years spent some quality time bonding and talking with their CAIRDE. They enjoyed the opportunity to share positive experiences on their transition into Borrisokane Community College to date. 6th year students were given an opportunity to enjoy a tea and a chat with their peers, positive messages from their teachers were shared with all students and this was a welcomed break from their current hectic schedule.  3rd year students participated in sports skills challenges outside on the school pitch to promote getting active for your mental health.  Finally, all staff and students formed the shape “BCC Schools Go Orange” on the hurling field and together released eco-friendly orange balloons to conclude the day. Video footage and aerial photos were taken using a drone. Borrisokane Community College and the HPS committee are unified in their efforts to try to successfully achieve Ambassador School Status for the 4th consecutive year. A lot of hard work took place during the day and in the preparations leading up to the event. The day ties in very appropriately with this years’ theme “Empower Your Voice”.  Thanks to all the students, staff and the HPS committee for their valiant efforts in ensuring this day was extremely enjoyable and a great success.
