Borrisokane Community College Notes – 14/11/2025

Science Week

Science Week 2025 was marked in Borrisokane Community College with daily quizzes, announcements, competitions and activities in class. First years took part in a poster competition for Science Week. 2nd years completed the science week active schools quiz around the walkway on Thursday. Among the other activities, Class 3E enjoyed using electronic equipment, examining the use of LEDs and constructing circuits. Another class took part in a forensic science module, exploring the structure of the human brain and the Covid virus. Well done to all the students who participated and thanks to the teachers who organised them.

ABP Angus Visit

Students from Borrisokane Community College taking part in the certified Irish Angus school’s competition visited ABP Nenagh to gain a deeper insight into beef production. Don O’Brien, the general manager of the Nenagh ABP factory gave a tour of the whole factory. This was very beneficial to the project research as for the Irish Angus Beef schools competition. Good luck to both teams and their teacher Ms. Hayes as they prepare for the competition.

Erasmus Visit

Students and teachers at Borrisokane Community College enjoyed a vibrant and activity-packed week as they welcomed visiting Erasmus+ students from Täby, Lleida and Leverkusen as part of their ongoing Erasmus+ project titled “Water and Life.” The week began on Monday with a warm welcome ceremony accompanied by the school’s traditional music group. Other activities included a full workshop day, with students engaging in a variety of hands-on lessons ranging from Geography, Science and Irish language activities to Kingship and Sacrifice workshops, cultural presentations, school tours and team-building sessions. That evening, the group relaxed together for a Movie Night on campus.

On Wednesday, the Erasmus+ group travelled to Lullymore Heritage Park, where they explored its award-winning biodiversity trails, traditional Irish heritage exhibits, and outdoor village attractions. Thursday brought another highlight with a trip west to Atlantiquaria in Galway. Students enjoyed a self-guided tour before walking the Salthill Promenade and exploring Galway City.

On Friday morning, the visiting students took part in an Irish cooking workshop, preparing a traditional Irish breakfast before joining a GAA skills session and sports workshop led by staff and TY students.

The week provided an unforgettable cultural exchange, giving the visiting groups a real insight into Irish school life, local heritage, and community spirit – while allowing Borrisokane students to build friendships and develop confidence through shared learning and activities.

Careers Talk

Thank you to Michael Sharpe for speaking with our Senior Cycle Higher Level Maths students about the range of maths related careers.

Senior Soccer

Our senior soccer team had a great 4-3 win against a strong Crescent College team on Tuesday November 11th and will move to R3 of the FAI Schools Senior Challenge Cup. Well done to all involved. Special mention to Captain Johnny Naughnane who pulled off some fine saves in goal and Philip Lemanczyk who scored with a well struck free kick.

Camogie

Our Junior Camogie Team played Borrisoleigh in tough conditions in their first game on Friday November 7th. The girls fought hard but unfortunately lost to a strong Borrisoleigh team. We look forward to our next game!

Well done to our Junior Camogie team who had a great game vs Our Lady’s Templemore on Monday November 10th. Their work rate and effort resulted in the girls having a brilliant win.

Badminton

Borrisokane Community College was well represented at the Tipperary Badminton Championships in Templemore on Wednesday November 11th. Our U19s beat CBS Thurles in the final so they will go on to represent Tipperary in the Munster Championships in January. Our U16 team narrowly lost in the final as did our U14 team, but it was a great achievement to win their groups and get into the final.  For some students this was their first ever badminton competition and they all represented the school so well. Thank you to Michelle Tierney for organising another excellent event.

TY Driving School

A group of TY students travelled to Pallas Karting in Tynagh on Wednesday the 12th.
They took part in driving lessons by practising on the track and also learned about the theoretical side of driving by completing a theory test. Students were given a demonstration of the engine and to finish the day, they took part in an activity using visual distortion goggles to experience the dangers of drink driving

Students Council

Well done to 6th year students Dan Ryan, Darragh Ehinger, Shauna Gantly and Maria Morris who represented the school at the Irish Second-Level Students Union (ISSU) Regional Students Council for North Tipperary, Clare and Limerick held in the Clayton Hotel, Limerick City. The event included discussions on relevant current topics facing second level students, a workshop with a trade union, civics mentoring and an election of Regional Officers. This was a great experience for the students and they thoroughly enjoyed their day
