Borrisokane students reflect on recent trip to Killary.
By Katie Walsh and Niki Lillis.
Muck, fears, laughs, tears – Killary. What more can I say? Killary was a once off experience never to be forgotten.
On Monday 14 th September, 52 Transition Year students along with 5 brave teachers (Ms. McLoughlin, Ms. Morgan, Ms. Faraher, Mr. Conroy and Mr. Treacy) packed onto buses and left for Killary Adventure Centre on the Galway/Mayo border. The bus journey was full of laughter and inspirational singing and after about 4 hours of travelling we arrived at our destination.
When we reached the centre it was off to get started on the fun things - the activities! First of all we went rock climbing, that was brilliant. After that was the giant swing, which is 60 feet high and certainly not for the faint hearted. That was definitely the highlight of my trip!
That evening we went to the beach to collect firewood for the camp fire. A sing-song was enjoyed by all before a dark walk back and a much needed sleep. The following morning we took part in both kayaking and gorge walking. This was a lot of fun, especially having to jump from the top of a very big cliff!
Once we had warmed up we set off for more. Next was the Killary Challenge which consisted of team building challenges and tasks. One challenge was to crawl across a muddy, wet bog hole where we all ended up covered in black mud!
That night the ‘Ms. Killary' competition took place where the girls took much pleasure in bringing out the lads feminine sides. The lads strutted down the catwalk, showed some interesting talents and striking fierce poses!
Then came the final day of our trip but there were still some activities left for us to take part in. First up were the high ropes; this involved climbing up a huge totem pole and jumping from the top to catch a swinging bar. It took guts. The final activity was laser combat games, similar to paint balling except no paint was used….just pure adrenaline!
Killary has brought us closer together and helped us work together and become one unit. We have pictures and memories that will last a lifetime. The trip was a great experience and it was a great success; thanks to our teachers and our parents for making the trip possible.

Darrel Darcy:
On entering Borrisokane Community College in September 2000 Darrel Darcy was following in the footsteps of his father Sean, his mother Nancy and brothers Roy and Lee. In the course of the following six years Darrel studied for his Junior Cert, did the Transition Year and then studied for his Leaving Cert. While in Borrisokane Community College Darrel made many many friends. He enjoyed his time in school and took a full part in all school activities. Sport was a huge part of Darrel's life. As a first year he was not the tallest and not the most confident but he left his skills do his talking. He played on all school teams up along with the highlight probably being lining out at full forward on the All Ireland winning Senior Hurling team of 2005 in which match he scored 1-1 and had an excellent game. In 2006 he captained the Senior Hurling team. Even with an outstanding display at full forward from Darrel Borrisokane were narrowly defeated by St Brogan's Bandon.
Darrel played hurling and football for the Tipperary Vocational Schools. He represented Tipperary at Minor, U-21 and Senior Level. Darrel was a very skilled player, a very determined and competitive player but above all he was a great sportsman. He enjoyed his victories and he accepted his defeats in true sporting fashion.
Darrel's contribution at Club, School and County level brought great happiness to many people. It's unfortunate that Darrel will not be around to develop his talents further, but it's good to have known him, and to have enjoyed his talents. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Borrisokane Community College 10th September 2007
The Summer Holidays are long gone and everybody has returned full of energy and enthusiasm. For the ninety plus first years the first few nervous days are over and they are settling in to the routine of regularly changing rooms and teachers. The students entering 6 th year find it hard to believe that their final year has arrived. Now is the time to draw up ones plan for the year ahead and be determined to follow it. The part time job should be put aside by all 6 th year students keen to get the most out of their Leaving Cert. Between four and five hours per night should be spent on homework and study. As the saying goes “You only get out of something what you put into it”,
Leaving Cert Results:
The class of 2007 will be remembered for a long time in Borrisokane Community College while several students achieved well over 450 points the achievement of Philip Donnellan amassing over 800 points is truly unique. As a student in Borrisokane Community College Philip took part in all activities. He was a member of the hurling, football, and soccer teams. He played GAA for his club Shannon Rovers. He played Rugby with Nenagh Ormond. He played with the Tipperary Minor Football team and yet he found time to keep up with his studies. Philip was a leader among his classmates and his example made it easy for others to give of their best both in the classroom and on the field of play. All in Borrisokane Community College wish Philip and all the others in the class of 2007 the very best for the future.

The first round of the Munster schools senior “A” Hurling championship was played last Tuesday. Nenagh and Roscrea were to prove the toughest matches in the league stages. The Borrisokane team went down by 8 points to Roscrea in the group stage and beat Nenagh by a similar margin, to set up a final showdown with Roscrea.
Having played some great basketball the Borris girls were let down in front of the basket on numerous occasions but this was put right in the final. Having found our shooting range the Borrisokane team emerged victorious by 1 basket in a vary close competitive affair and were crowned Senior champions for a second year in a row. Michela Morkan's fine baskets, Amanda Burke's spirit and great running by Lorraine Davis, Mairead O'Meara and Marion Ryan was the difference between the two sides in the end.

Senior Hurling
History was made at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny on Sunday last 24th April when Borrisokane Community College won the All-Ireland Senior “A” title for the very first time. It proved to be third time lucky for Borrisokane as Banagher and Thomastown had previously defeated Borris in finals. After a closely contested encounter Borris emerged victorious on a scoreline of Borrisokane 2-9, Johnstown 0-8. Having come close in recent years the victory was all the sweeter and hopefully many more victories will follow in the years ahead.
Well done to all involved.
Soccer
First Year Shannonside Girls Soccer final.
Borrioskane CC 2 St. Flannans, Ennis 1
Borrisokane won their first ever first year trophy thanks to a goal in either half from striker Nicolette Finn. Borris played with the aid of the wind in the 1 st half and were totally dominant. The striking pair of Emma Mulqueen and Nicolette Finn were in top form however luck wasn't on their side as a number of chances went closely wide and were saved by the Flannan's goalkeeper. The break through came 5 minutes before halftime, Emma Mulqueen brilliantly lobbed the outcoming goalkeeper and as the ball approached the goal line Nicolette Finn applied the finishing touch. St. Flannan's started the 2 nd half strongly and the Borrisokane defence were under severe pressure. The defence was breached 15 minutes into the half, this then spurred the Borrisokane girls into life. A number of chances went a begging before Nicolette Finn scored a top quality goal which proved to be the winner.

Senior Girls Soccer at Borrisokane
The senior squad followed their victory in the U-15 competition last year with a great win over Pallaskenry in the U19 Shannonside League on Wednesday last May 11 th in UL. In a very tough, competitive battle the Borrisokane girls created the best chances in the first half but the half-time score was 0 – 0. Pallaskenry had weathered the storm well. The Borris girls soaked up a lot of pressure in the first 15 minutes of the second half and just when it looked like things were swinging in Pallaskenry's favour Vanessa Austin produced a cool finish to lob the keeper and put Borris 1-0 ahead. Lorraine Davis had gone close to scoring on a couple of occasions from free-kicks and it was from one of these free-kicks that Borris were to score their second. Melissa Austin latched on to a well delivered ball into the box and steered it to the net. 2 – 0.
At this stage Borrisokane were well in top and playing some great passing football. It was inevitable that there would be more goals. Again Lorraine Davis and Vanessa Austin were involved. Lorraine produced a fine delivery from a corner and Vanessa met it at the far post with a header. Brilliant goal, 3 – 0 to Borrisokane. By now it was just a question of how long before the celebrations could start but the Borris girls were not finished yet. It was fitting that Lorraine Davis would have the final say as she found the bottom corner with a well placed shot from just inside the box. 4 – 0 .A brilliant team performance and a great victory, well deserved. The girls showed great team spirit and commitment and were the deserved winners in the end. In only the second year of competitive soccer in Borrisokane CC to have collected two titles in two years is a remarkable achievement and this was highlighted by the chairman in his presentation speech.

There are four groups of three teams with the winner in each group advancing to the knockout stages. Borrisokane's next match is a home fixture against St. Flannan's Ennis who are reported to be a good team, though they are young. Borrisokane lined out as follows: Emma Mulqueen, Sophie O'Donoghue, Karen Seymour, Anne Cordial, Marie Ryan, Andrea Davis, Vanessa Austin, Amanda Burke, Michaela Morkan [2-7, (1-4 frees)], Marian Ryan (0-1), Lorraine Davis (Capt.), Fiona Ryan (1-0), Ann-Marie Quinlan (1-0), Niamh Enright (1-1), Anne Cleary (0-1).
